Mika Elo is professor of artistic research and the head of the doctoral program in fine arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki, Finland. His research interests include theory of photographic media, philosophical media theory, and artistic research. The areas of his research interest include theory of photography, media aesthetics and epistemology of artistic research. He is participating in the discussions in these areas in the capacity of visual artist, educator, curator and researcher. In 2012–2013 he co-curated the Finnish exhibition Falling Trees at the 55th Venice Biennial. In 2019, in the context of the 58th Venice Biennial he curated together with Henk Slager the Research Pavilion #3 on Research Ecologies. Most recently he has curated the research-based exhibition Paradoxes of Photography (2022) at the Finnish Museum of Photography.
